The section has 43 members from 16 countries.

Objectives of the Section:

To promote the discipline of Geriatric Psychiatry within the framework of EPA by:

1. ensuring that EPA Executive Committee and the Board are well informed of geriatric psychiatry issues,

2. organizing symposia and workshops at EPA congresses,

3. collaborating with other international organizations with similar interests and participating in major international meetings relevant to the discipline,

4. developing and disseminating educational material for practitioners in the field, and

5. providing technical support to relevant national organization and EPA members.

Recent and future activities:

1. “Promotion of Mental Health and Well being in Older People - making it happen”: a European Union thematic conference

The European Commission’s Directorate for Health and Consumers and the Ministry of Health and Social Affaires of Spain together with the support of the Presidency of Spain of the European Union organized at Madrid in June 2010 a European Union thematic conference on “Promotion of Mental health and Well being in Older People - making it happen”. EPA was represented by Dr. Carlos Augusto de Mendonça Lima who prepared a short report.

Plans

1. “Promoting Social Inclusion and Combating Stigma for better Mental Health and Wellbeing”

To participate to the thematic Conference on stigma and social exclusion of people with mental health problems co-organized at Lisbon on November 2010 by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Consumers and by the Portuguese Ministry of Health.

2. EPA-SGP & WFSBP

To collaborate to the production of Guidelines in the Treatment of Resistant Depression in Old Age.

3. EPA-SGP, WPA-SOAP & IPA

To collaborate with the WPA Section of Old Age Psychiatry and the International Psychogeriatric Association Task Force on Mental Health Services in Residential Facilities to realize in 2011 a consensus meeting on Residential Care for Old People with Mental Disorders.
