General information

The European Platform of Psychiatrists was initiated in 2007 and represented a major evolution for the association. The objective of the EPA European Platform of Psychiatrists was to develop a basis of exchange and collection of input from the national societies in the following areas: education, accreditation, curricula, research networking, new international classification system, European professional networking, mental health care systems and their transformation in Europe and to streamline the different efforts of all organisations, national and international, in order to build a spirit of belonging to the European Psychiatry community.

2009:  3rd EPA European Platform of Psychiatrists

The 3rd EPA European Platform of Psychiatrists took place on 23 January 2009 in Lisbon, Portugal.

After discussing topics of common interests between EPA and National Psychiatric Associations (1st Platform, Brussels 2007), which led to the set up projects for joint implementation (2nd Platform, Nice 2008), it seemed appropriate to propose a reflection on the raison d’être of this grouping, its sustainability and development potential.

Under the motto “Sustainability of the Platform: why and how?” this meeting aimed to further define the key topics, which need to be addressed in the future at the European level. The Platform participants also discussed what should be the best framework to consolidate their partnership and to pave the way to a common voice for National Psychiatric Associations in Europe.

2008:  2nd EPA European Platform of Psychiatrists

The European Psychiatric Association (EPA) invited representatives of National Psychiatric Associations to the 2nd European Platform of Psychiatrists with the active participation of the European Brain Council(EBC) and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. The meeting was organised in Nice on 4 April 2008, under the motto “From design to implementation of concrete projects in Psychiatry with a European dimension”.

EPA gives great importance to developing closer links with National Societies, besides the regular partnership including CME Itinerant courses proposed to National Societies and the possibility for them to disseminate information about Psychiatric Research and practice in the Journal “European Psychiatry”. Therefore clear expectations were formulated for the 2nd Platform: to draw concrete outcomes, to make this Platform a lively tool, and to conclude with a to-do list for future actions. The focus was on 3 issues of common interest: Education, Networking, and European Guidelines in Psychiatry.

Thanks to fruitful discussions, 3 challenging projects were designed for further implementation:

  • Project on Education: the EPA – Academia of Excellence in Psychiatry
  • Project on Networking for research and funding of projects in European Psychiatry
  • Project of European Guidelines in Psychiatry: “Recommended Guidance”

2007:  1st EPA European Platform of Psychiatrists

The first AEP European Round Table on the theme: “Identity and Harmonization of European Psychiatry” on 17-18 November 2007 in Brussels, Belgium was a real success thanks to the presence and the participation of 20 European representatives of the National Societies in Psychiatry.

The set-up and construction of the “European Platform of Psychiatrists” represented a major evolution for the association.
