European Brain Council (EBC)

European Brain Council (EBC) is a coordinating council founded in 2002, and has offices in Brussels and Florence. It is promoting brain-related research by collaborating with member organisations, interacting with the Institutions of the European Union, fostering dialogue between scientists and society, promoting education and disseminating information about brain research and diseases in Europe.

The membership of the European Brain Council consists of professional organisations, patient organisations and industrial partners. Members of EBC include the European Federation of Neurological Societies, the European Psychiatric Association, Federation of European Neuroscience Societies, the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, The European Federation of Neurological Associations and Global Alliance for Mental Illness Advocacy Networks.

Setting the scene for discussion and raising awareness of neuroscience research in Europe

EJN is publishing the 2011 version of Consensus Document on European Brain Research (European Journal of Neuroscience, Vol. 33, pp. 768-818, 2011).

The Consensus document on European Brain Research, prepared by European Brain Council - EBC in collaboration with more than 200 European scientists and patients organizations, contains both proposals for future research programmes and describes the needs and achievements of research in Europe.

The document highlights the need for strong basic research in neuroscience and the development of a strong European platform for brain research which is needed to address brain diseases, representing nowadays a societal emergency in European countries. The present document represents an update to the 2006 Consensus Document, reflecting changes in research priorities and advances in brain research that have taken place since 2006.

Multinational and multidisciplinary teams have once again come together to express their views, not only on what needs to be done, but also on the current strengths in European research, hoping that once again the Consensus document could inspire policy makers and stakeholders in directing funding for research in Europe.

European Council

EPA was granted in February 1989 with a consultant status for the European Council followed by a participatory status in 2003.

1st Forum of European Medical Academic Societies

The 1st Forum of European Medical Academic Societies was held on 1 December 2009 in collaboration with the European Commission in Stockholm, Sweden, with a view to strengthen the funding for medical research, but also to set up a basis for discussion on other issues, such as reviewing, research objectives and communication of research results to the public.

EPA was represented at this forum by Professor Hans-Jürgen Möller.

6th Congress of Interns in Psychiatry

On 1-2 October 2009, the 6th National Congress of Interns in Psychiatry was held in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.

The meeting focused on “Conceptions of Human Beings in Psychiatry” (“Conceptions de l’Homme en Psychiatrie”) and its objective was to contribute to the training of interns in psychiatry, presenting symposia and poster exhibitions and promoting exchanges between the interns. Up to 300 interns from France and all over Europe participated in this event and shared two days full of training and reflection, as well as conviviality.

Professor Cyril Höschl, EPA Past President, has represented the European Psychiatric Association at this event and offered a lecture discussing “Is there a European specificity in Psychiatry?”

ECNP-EPA Joint Symposium

The European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) and European Psychiatric Association (EPA) organise a Joint Symposium entitled “The ICD-11 and DSM-V in preparation: consequences for research and action” on 15 September 2009 from 14.00 to 16.05 at the 22nd ECNP Congress in Istanbul, Turkey. This session is moderated by the EPA Past President Professor Cyril Höschl and the speakers are:

1)Norman Sartorius, Switzerland: “Process of development of the ICD-11 and DSM-V: first results and cultural perspectives”

2) Robin M. Murray, United Kingdom: “Recent achievements in neuroscience and their relevance to updated classification systems”

3) Michael Linden, Germany: “Functional impairment as a classification criterion?”

EPA/ECNP regional workshop

EPA and ECNP organised together a regional workshop on “Psychopharmacology of anxiety disorders in light of new classification systems (ICD-11, DSM-V)” aimed at under 40 years old participants. Altogether 13 young psychiatrists and one neurologist in training attended the workshop that took place on 25-27 June 2009 in Košice, Slovakia. The tutors of the workshop were C. Hoschl (EPA past-president), J. Zohar (ECNP president-elect) and E. Palova (President, Slovak Psychopharmacological Association).

ECNP - EPA Seminar in Neuropsychopharmacology

Alessandro Serretti (Italy), Iris Illebrandi (Administrator of ECNP), Celso Arango (Spain), Cyril Höschl (Czech Republic), Joseph Zohar (Israel), Janusz Rybakovski, Malgorzata Rzewuska and Jan Jaracz (all hosts from Poland)

ECNP and EPA have an active ongoing collaboration relation and they organised jointly a seminar in Neuropsychopharmacology from 28 to 30 May 2009 in Czerniejewo, Poland. At this occasion the EPA past president, Professor Cyril Höschl presented a lecture on “Schizophrenia update: Discrete and continuous approach in the conceptualization of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder”.
