EPA offers membership to European and International psychiatrists and associations of psychiatry under various membership categories: Individual, International Individual, Associate, Student, Fellows, Honorary, National Society/Association, Affiliate and Associate Organisation.
Individual membership is restricted to those who are psychiatrists or scientists working in the field of psychiatric research.
They are citizens or residents of a European country (i.e., a country belonging to the European Region of the WHO) or are licensed to work in a European country. They have the right to vote in the General Assembly and can be elected to the Board.
The “Emeritus” title can be conferred upon request to Individual members officially retired from assigned duties. A fifty percent discount on annual fees is applied.
International Individual members
International Individual members are psychiatrists and psychiatric researchers who are not citizens or residents of a European country or who are not authorised to practice in a European country.
They may attend the General Assembly as observers, but do not have the right to vote at the General Assembly and cannot be elected to the Board.
Professionals who are working in the field of psychiatry or Mental Health, who are neither psychiatrists nor researchers in psychiatry (for ex. general practitioners, psychologists, neurologists, psychiatric nurses, social workers) may become Associate Members. This membership category is open to any applicant fulfilling the professional or academic criteria, regardless of country of origin.
University students in fields related to Mental Health, and who are enrolled full-time in an educational institution (upon annual proof of full-time status) may become Student Members. This membership category is open to any applicant fulfilling the professional or academic criteria, regardless of country of origin.
The status of Fellow can be conferred on EPA Individual members, paying regularly their membership fee, recommended by an EPA Individual Member and who meet either of the following criteria:
- they have made significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge about, yet not limited to, risk factors, pathogenesis, diagnosis, classification, treatment or prevention of mental disorders, or to the development of psychiatric practice or services, including education;
- they have made an outstanding contribution to the fulfilment of the aims of the EPA, as documented by a series of successful activities promoting significantly the goals of the Association.
Honorary membership may be conferred on any Individual member or Fellow who has excelled in his/her service to the EPA. Honorary members shall not pay a fee.
National Society/Association members
National Society/Association members are the national psychiatric associations of Europe. Applications for National Society/Association membership shall be approved by a simple majority vote of the Board. All members of fully paid up National Society/Association Members of the EPA can be Affiliate Members of the EPA. Affiliate Members shall not pay a fee.
Donor membership may be conferred on any natural or legal person having made a special contribution to the development of the Association through one or more donations. Donors can attend the General Assembly, yet are not entitled to vote. Donors shall not pay a fee.
Associate Organisation Members
Any association or organisation with an interest in psychiatry or mental health may apply to become Associate Organisation Member of the EPA in writing to the Secretary General of the EPA. Nominations for Associate Membership shall be endorsed by a simple majority vote of the Board.
