Prof. Norman Sartorius, MD, PhD, FRCPsych, is a psychiatrist and a psychologist who pioneered psychiatric epidemiology, social psychiatry and public health approaches to mental health issues.
Past Director of the Mental Health Program of the World Health Organization (1977-1993), Past President of the World Psychiatric Association (1993 – 1999) and of the European Psychiatric Association (1999- 2001) he now serves as the President of the Association for the Improvement of Mental Health Programs and is a member of the Geneva Prize Foundation for which he served as a President (2004 -2008) He has published more than 600 papers in peer reviewed journals and authored, co-authored, edited or co-edited more than 120 books (h index of 122). His current interest and work are focused on comorbidity of mental and physical disorders, on fighting stigma of mental illness and on the education of psychiatrists early in their career.
Professor Sartorius holds professorial appointments at the Universities of London, Zagreb and several other universities in the USA and China. He has been awarded honorary degrees and prizes in a number of countries across the globe.
