EPA presents Headway Report on Mental Health at the European Parliament

Prof. Andrea Fiorillo, EPA President, and Prof. Celso Arango, EPA President Elect presented the latest edition of the Headway – Mental Health Index 5.0 on “Care, Cohesion, and Growth: Advancing Mental Health through the Wellbeing Economy” at the European Parliament on Wednesday, 10 December.

The Headway initiative is developed by the TEHA Group, in partnership with Angelini Pharma. The recent event was made possible thanks to MEP Tomáš Zdechovský and featured Péter Kéri, GAMIAN-Europe President and John Saunders, EUFAMI Executive Director.

The Headway – Mental Health Index provides an overview of the prevalence of mental health disorders and territorial disparities in healthcare system capacities across Europe. This fifth edition adds a specific focus on the social value of informal caregiving.

The analysis shows that the support informal carers active in mental health provide in the EU+UK is equivalent to €214 billion. Yet their indispensable contribution is often invisible, with caregivers facing psychological burdens and social isolation.

Initiatives that bring international institutions, policymakers, and clinician, patient, and caregiver associations together are one step towards achieving better mental health for all.
