EPA shares the psychiatry perspective at the EAN Congress 2026
The EPA joined the 12th European Academy of Neurology Congress, on 27-30 June 2026 in Geneva. The Association was represented in two sessions dedicated to strengthening ties between neurology and psychiatry.
EPA President Prof. Andrea Fiorillo joined a special advocacy session, focused on reducing the burden of neurological disorders across Europe through prevention. Opening the wider session, EAN President Elena Moro had set out brain health as an urgent, cross-disciplinary priority, calling on neurologists to work more closely with other professionals, policymakers, patient organisations and public health bodies, and stressing that because neurological disorders do not respect national borders, the response to them cannot either. Building on this theme, Prof. Fiorillo urged the brain and mental health communities to move beyond working in silos. He pointed to recent joint initiatives, including the European Brain Health Summit held in Brussels in March 2026, as evidence that closer collaboration between the two fields is both possible and already under way.
EPA President Elect Celso Arango and EPA Secretary of Sections Umberto Volpe presented at the EAN-EPA Joint Session, ‘The Biological and Social Determinants of Neurological and Mental Health: Toward a Unified Brain Health Perspective’. Speakers explored the case for primary prevention in psychiatry, the need for greater harmonisation of mental health services across Europe, and the shared vulnerabilities underlying neurodevelopmental disorders, noting recent activities and publications of the EPA Task Forces on Precision Psychiatry, Public Mental Health, and Mental and Brain Health across the Lifespan.
These sessions and presence at the exhbition space reflected a growing recognition that mental and neurological health are best understood not as separate domains but as two sides of the same coin, with a need for shared prevention strategies, harmonised care, and sustained collaboration between the disciplines.
