5th EPA Forum

Never has the EPA Forum been as well participated or as highly discussed as in 2019. The 5th Forum hosted during the 27th European Congress on 6 April 2019 in Warsaw, was titled “Implementing comprehensive evidence-based and right-centred strategies for mental health care across Europe”.

More than 400 participants were welcomed to this years Forum by the EPA President Silvana Galderisi (mandate 2017-2019) who gave an overview of the two discussion panels.

The first session on “The EU contribution to Mental Health Policy and Transfer of Best Practices in Mental Health at the EU Member State Level” was chaired by Prof Silvana Galderisi and the newly elected President Philip Gorwood (mandate 2019-2021). High-level speakers, including EU representatives and experts in the mental health field provided interesting insights on existing and future research projects. An interactive discussion followed on challenges and opportunities that EU Mental Health Care is facing and how EPA can support in overcoming them.

In the second session, a more international perspective on mental health care was addressed“ around “The Impact of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) on Mental Health Policies, Research and Care”, which gave the chance to exchange perspectives of the UN Special Rapporteur, the WHO, the World Psychiatric Association, patents organization GAMIAN-Europe as well as family and carers’ organization EUFAMI. In the debate concerns were raised on keeping a high standard and respecting the rights of people with a disability in order to achieve quality mental health care.
