Patient-Oriented Healthcare in Schizophrenia

On 22 September 2023, during its annual meeting, the Lithuanian Psychiatric Association held a joint symposium with the EPA on “Patient – Oriented Health Care in Schizophrenia”. The topic is an important one as it deals with the burden of schizophrenia, a severe mental illness, and the key aspect of adequate individual management of the disease.

The Lithuanian Psychiatric Association invited both foreign and local lecturers to participate in the joint Symposium. The event was opened by Ramune Mazaliauskiene, President of the Lithuanian Psychiatric Association, and Prof. Virginija Adomaitiene, from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Psychiatric Clinic, which partnered the event. They both introduced the Symposium, presented the lecturers and mentioned the EPA’s contribution.

Prof. Bernardo Carpiniello, from Cagliari University, who is the current Chair of the EPA Council on National Psychiatric Associations spoke about Recovery and Schizophrenia. Prof. Thomas Pollmächer, from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Germany, and member of the EPA Committee on Ethical Issues gave a lecture on the EPA Code of Ethics. The audience was very interested in this important topic as it deals with ethical issues in their daily practice.

Prof. Vesta Steibliene, from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, delivered a presentation on “New Attitudes in the Schizophrenia Etiology and Treatment Perspectives”, whilst Prof. Māris Taube, President of the Latvian Psychiatric Association, gave a lecture on “Schizophrenia Patients Care in Latvia – Hospital, Outpatient, Community Care“.
