Aims & Objectives

Section's mission

The EPA section “Schizophrenia” is aimed to promote high standards in research, training and clinical practice in its field of interest and to fight the stigma related to the diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Section's objectives

  1. To disseminate updated knowledge relevant to etiopathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia
  2. To favour cultural exchanges and cross-fertilization among different approaches to the study of this complex diagnostic entity
  3. To promote early diagnosis and identification of at risk subjects
  4. To raise standards of care
  5. To address ethical issues in research and clinical care involving people with schizophrenia
  6. To identify unmet needs and means to address them
  7. To develop and deliver training courses for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development
  8. To compare clinical service, training, research and policy across Europe

Within the 22nd EPA Congress, held in Munich, Germany, 1-4 March, 2014, the Section on Schizophrenia organized the following Section symposia.

1) Section Symposium: Improving physical health in people with schizophrenia (Chairpersons: W. Gaebel, S. Galderisi; Speakers: A. Mitchell, A. Montejo, N. Sartorius);

 

SECTION SYMPOSIA IN 2015

Within the 23rd EPA Congress, held in Vienna, Austria, 28-31 March, 2015, the Section on Schizophrenia organized the following Section symposia.

1) Section Symposium in collaboration with the Section on Forensic Psychiatry: The "mad axman": the relationship between psychosis and violence (Chairpersons: Birgit Völlm and Silvana Galderisi; Speakers: Fazel Seena, Giovanni Stanghellini, Julian Neil Beezhold) which has been awarded with the Section Symposium Award.

2) Section symposium Sub-threshold psychotic experiences in the general population (Chairpersons: S. Galderisi, W. Gaebel; Speakers: Ruud van Winkel, Wulf Roessler, Mike Jackson, Paolo Fusar-Poli).

Within the 24th EPA Congress, held in Madrid, Spain, 12-15 March, 2016, the Section has organized the following Section symposia.

1) Inter-Section Symposium in collaboration with the Section on Psychopathology: Hallucinations and Delusions in Schizophrenia: From Phenomenology to Neurobiology (Chairpersons: S. Galderisi; M. Musalek; Speakers: G. Stanghellini; I. Melle; T. Dierks), which has been awarded with the Section Symposium Award.

2) Section symposium: Is Schizophrenia a Disorder of Brain Connectivity? (Chairpersons: S. Galderisi; W. Gaebel; Speakers: S. Walther; S. Borgwardt; G. Wagner).

3) Inter-Section Workshop in collaboration with the Section on Psychopathology: Schizophrenia Research: The Necessary Link between Psychopathology and Clinical Neuroscience (Chairpersons: M.L. Figueira; S. Galderisi; Speakers:  A. Erfurth; F. Oyebode; G. Sachs; E. Pomarol-Clotet).
