Old Age Services across the UK

In December 2013, EPA’s Section on Old Age Psychiatry called on the EPA President, Professor Danuta Wasserman, to react on the situation of closing specialist mental health services for older people in the UK.

An open letter was published in the Times in January 2014 (see publications section below), bearing co-signatures of Royal College representatives and some EPA members. Both the EPA Board and the Council of National Societies/Associations (NPAs) discussed this issue in Munich in March 2014. The Council of NPAs was asked to prepare a letter to Right Honourable Jeremy Hunt, the UK Secretary of State for Health, which was sent in March 2014. In response to EPA’s letter, Mr. Hunt sent a detailed reply in August 2014. Both letters were published European Psychiatry;Volume 29, Issue 7.

The UK Chief Medical Officer published the following statement in her 2014 annual report:&nbsp;<em>&ldquo;Mental health problems in older adults are common, often undiagnosed but as amenable to established treatments as in other groups. Helping people with combined physical, psychological and social difficulties in the context of ageing and end of life requires specialism. This could be compromised by any move to generic ; services

Description :

The Minister of National Education, Higher Education and Research
& the Minister of Social Affairs, Health and Women’s Right
Birmingham, 20 April 2015
Dear Sir/ Madam
Re: Training and specialisation in Old Age Psychiatry
During the recent Congress of the European Psychiatric Association in Vienna, we heard of the recent problems of French Psychiatrist to implement a specific training in Old Age Psychiatry.
This issue was discussed at the meeting of Section of Geriatric Psychiatry on the 29 March 2015. We felt unanimously that the efforts of the French colleagues to develop and implement a specific training for Old Age Psychiatry is timely and is the best way to develop and improve the care of the French elderly suffering mental health problems and disorders.
We would appreciate if you could acknowledge and consider the concerns of the EPA section of Geriatric Psychiatry that further delays in developing and implementing specific training in Old Age Psychiatry may not sufficiently deal with the needs of French elderly with age-related mental health problems.
Hoping hearing from you soon
Kind regards
Professor Reinhard Heun
Chair of the EPA Section Geriatric Psychiatry
On behalf of the Section

Letter to the French Government in Response to the De-Listing of Antidementia Medication

Journal :

22 October 2018 - Letter to the French Government in Response to the De-Listing of Antidementia Medication

Dear Madam

We are concerned about the recent changes in the funding of antidementia drugs for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body disease and Parkinson’s dementia.

The Section of Old Age Psychiatry is part of the of the European Psychiatric Association (www.europsy.net) which represents all European psychiatrists including Old Age psychiatrists.

We have been made aware of  the recent changes in the funding and reimbursement of anti-dementia drugs in France. Our experiences that these drugs are helpful in different types of dementias have been supported by several large-scale studies including systematic reviews. There is no doubt that there is significant positive effect of these anti-dementia drugs.

The size of the improvements might be individually different for different subjects with dementia depending on the diagnosis, severity and individual response. However, even though mean effects might not be large, we all found that in the individual patients anti-dementia drugs can make the life of patients and carers much better, much more enjoyable and worth living again. The lack of support for patient and carers would disadvantage an already disadvantaged group of suffering people.

Consequently, we would express our concerns and would ask the Minister to reconsider their decision. We hope that our concerns can be appreciated in the interests of the patients and carers.

With kind regards.

Professor Reinhard Heun

Chair of the Section of Old Age Psychiatry at the European Psychiatric Association
